Manchester’s Library Theatre, in the historic Central Reference Library in the heart of Manchester City Centre, has a first-class reputation for excellence and innovation. Its productions of contemporary dramas and modern interpretations of classic plays, performed in its intimate 312-seat auditorium, have won plaudits from the media and audiences alike.
The theatre’s annual Christmas show for children is always a highlight of the festive season, while throughout the year, the Library hosts visits from some of the country’s leading touring companies such as Out of Joint, Rasa, and Compass Theatre Company.
The Library Theatre, which opened in 1952 and is one of the longest-running continuously producing theatres in the country, also stages regular one-off events. In recent years, the likes of Tony Benn, Germaine Greer, Clive James, Arthur Smith, Janet Street-Porter and Ann Widdecombe have all appeared on the Library stage.
The current season at the Library continues with Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece Waiting for Godot (1 February – 8 March); David Edgar’s new play Testing the Echo (11-15 March); Library Theatre production of Frozen (4-26 April); Alan Ayckbourn’s If I Were You (30 May – 21 June).
